Robert Smith Obituary

Robert E. Smith Jr., age 56 of Harker Heights, TX and formerly of Fulton, died on Friday, August 6, 2021, at his home. He was born on October 12, 1964, in Mount Gilead to Robert E. Smith Sr. and Joyce E. (Wisner) Jones.

Bob was a graduate of the Cardington-Lincoln High School and also received a welding certificate from the Tri-Rivers Career Center. At an early age he worked his way from being a groundskeeper to a maintenance superintendent in Columbus, Ohio, overseeing over 6 different apartment developments at the same time. Later in life he became a successful business owner with his excavation company in Central Ohio. He also invested in a machine shop (with Jeff Powell) where he loved tinkering with engines whenever possible. After relocating to Texas, Robert had worked as a dump truck driver at Lone Star Paving and had also been an independent contractor, installing and repairing fences in the central Texas area.

Bob was working with his hands fixing and riding dirt bikes and building hot rods ever since he was an early teen. If you knew Bob, you probably had a story or two about riding in one of his cars growing up. He could talk you through fixing your own car over the phone, as some would say. After getting married and raising a family, he built his own house and shop and took great pride in making his property look immaculate. Some people would describe him as a modern-day MacGyver who could fix almost anything he set his mind to. He enjoyed going to the racetrack and always being with friends, family, and especially animals who he has always had a huge heart for. Bob loved riding his beautiful Harley motorcycle and never hesitated to crawl under a car to help someone fix something. He was a jack of all trades and was a perfectionist when it came to doing the job right and putting his name on it. He loved rescuing dogs, and always had multiple pets his entire life, who he loved and spoiled dearly. Bob recently had bought a beautiful home on several acres where he was remodeling and landscaping to perfection. After being blessed with two beautiful grandchildren--he enjoyed baking cookies and brownies with them--as he always had a sweet tooth. He also loved being with them riding dirt bikes and watching them play sports on the weekends.

Left to cherish his memory are his mother, Joyce (Harry Allen) Jones of Fulton; daughter, Jessica (Joshua) Metz of Jarrell, TX, son, Robert E. Smith III of Bartlett, TX; brother, Ronald (Tambra) Smith of Fulton, Rebecca (Steve) Hummell of Fulton and Roberta Nicholson of Gulf Breeze, FL; grandchildren: Brylie and Lincoln Metz of Jarrell, TX and many nieces, nephews, and extended family.
