Robert E. Smith, age 75 of Mount Gilead, died unexpectedly on Friday, August 15, 2025,
at his residence. He was born on September 26, 1949, in Marion to the late Paul M. and
Margaret A. (McClosky) Smith.
Bob was a 1968 graduate of Mount Gilead High School. After graduation Bob worked as
a welder for Stahl for many years, dedicating himself to his craft and taking pride in
every job he completed. Welding at Stahl wasn't just a job, it was a career Bob built with
his hands, day by day, until retirement.
On December 30, 1972, Bob married Nancy J. Hildebrand at Gilead Friends Church and
she survives in Marengo. Bob and Nancy continued to attend the Friends church over the
years.
Bob was a devoted Ohio State Buckeyes fan who rarely missed a game and proudly wore
scarlet and gray. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, sharing stories, laughter,
and making memories outdoors. Whether he was riding his scooter around the
neighborhood, tending to his garden, or simply soaking up the fresh air, Bob always felt
at home outside. He loved cooking for family and friends. In his younger years, he
enjoyed staying active through bowling, took great pride in coaching his girls' softball
teams, and other hobbies that reflected his fun-loving and energetic spirit.
In addition to his wife, Bob is also survived by his two daughters: Elizabeth Luce
(Nichole) of Toledo and Jennifer Luce of Galion; 5 grandchildren: Caraline, Eric, Vara,
Jacob, and Kirsten; 2 great-grandchildren: Zack & Max; 2 siblings: Thomas (Linda)
Smith of Lewis Center and Rebecca (Jon) Leuthold of Powell.
He is preceded in death by siblings Barbara Levering, Carl and Marilyn and Son-in-law
Scott Luce.
A Celebration of Bob's life will take place on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, from 5:00
PM to 7:00 PM at Gompf Funeral Home, 440 Center St. Cardington, Ohio 43315.
Memorial contributions can be made to Gompf Funeral Service to assist the family with funeral expenses.
Gompf Funeral Service of Cardington is honored to have been chosen to assist the Smith
family with Bob's final wishes.
