Richard A. James, age 85 of Cardington, passed away Wednesday, March 11, 2026, at Marion General Hospital. He was born on March 4, 1941, in Marion to the late William A. and Margaret M. (Woods) James.
Richard was a true jack-of-all-trades. Over his lifetime, he dedicated 52 years to farming, worked 36 years as a crane operator with Marion Power Shovel, and spent 12 years landscaping. He was also a skilled painter, welder, and fabricator. You could always find him working on something, bringing his hands-on spirit to every task. Outside of work, he loved collecting old Westerns and Donald Duck memorabilia. Richard loved listening to country music and mowing many acres on his zero-turn mower.
Richard was a family man, who took pride in always being there for his family. Not only was he a father but he was a hard worker providing for his family. Though tough and hardworking for most of his life, once he had grandchildren, he softened, showing a gentle and playful side.
On November 23, 1962, Richard married Linda Kay (Finch). She survives in Cardington.
In addition to his wife, Richard is survived by his children: Ronda L. James of Cardington, Julie J. (Randy) Brewer of Mount Gilead and Rodney A. James of Cardington; five grandchildren: Kora James, Kortney James, Allie Patton, Lyndsey Long and Maggie Brewer; three great-grandchildren and his sisters; Marilyn George, Carol (Teddy) Jolliff and Margaret Bigford all of Marion.
In addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in death by his brothers-in-law Homer George and Larry Bigford.
Friends may call on Thursday, March 19, 2026, from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at Gompf Funeral Home, 440 Center Street in Cardington. The funeral service will be held Friday, March 20, 2026, at the funeral home at 11:00 AM with Todd Jolliff officiating.
