Johnny Smith Obituary

Johnny J. Smith, age 79 of Zebulon, GA, formerly of Cardington passed away Saturday, March 18, 2023, at his residence. He was born on January 25, 1944, in Williamson, W.V. to the late Joe and Myrtle (Stepp) Smith.

Johnny was a high school graduate of Fort Gay High School and went on to work for General Electric where he manufactured industrial diamonds.

Johnny enjoyed spending his free time fishing, hunting, sitting around bonfires, and cooking. He also enjoyed doing crossword and jigsaw puzzles. Johnny was the biggest Ohio State fan and always enjoyed watching their games. His biggest treasure was his family though, he loved his family more than anything and always loved spending time with them.

On May 30, 1964, Johnny married Wanda Jean Thompson in Wayne, W.V. She preceded him in death on January 19, 2019.

Johnny is survived by his three daughters; Tammy (Mitch) Dean of Cardington; Kim (William) Hamilton of Cardington; and Teresa Phillips of Cardington; two brothers Joe and Randy Smith, four sisters: Wanda Brewer, Phyllis Simms, Diana Thompson, and Anna Thompson; five grandchildren: Renee (Michael) Blaney, Josh Phillips, Lindsay (Cobey) Martin, John (Katie) Phillips, Eric Hamilton and six great-grandchildren: Hanah & Cameron Blaney, McKinley & Finley Martin, and Noah & Caleb Phillips.

In addition to his parents and wife, Johnny was preceded in death by a sister, Ruby Messer.

Friends may call on Friday, March 24, 2023, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at Gompf Funeral Home, 440 Center Street in Cardington. The funeral service will be held Saturday, March 25, 2023, at the funeral home at 11:00 am with calling hours one hour prior to the start of service. Pastor Randy Smith and Pastor Jeff Ball will officiate. Following the service, the burial will take place in the Marengo Cemetery.

Those wishing to make a memorial contribution are asked to consider the American Diabetes Association.
