John "Larry" Laurance Hill

Doctor John Laurance (Larry) Hill passed from this life on July 23, 2022, in the Charlestown Senior Community, Catonsville, MD. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Charlotte (Patterson) of Cardington, daughter Mary Magnus, son David Hill, brother Robert (Laura) Hill, and grandchildren Rebecca and Taylor Magnus and Zachary Hill. He was predeceased by his parents, older sister and a son. Larry was born June 7, 1936, in Columbus, Ohio to Winfrith E. and Mary Margaret (Evans) Hill. After attending the Columbus public schools, he received a B.A. degree from Ohio Wesleyan University and attended Ohio State Medical School, receiving his M.D. degree in 1961. A year of internship and a General Surgery residency followed in Columbus, after which he served as an Army surgeon in Vietnam. He then did transplantation research in Denver, Colorado, before moving to training in Thoracic Surgery and Pediatric Surgery in Washington, D.C. Following medical training, he was an Assistant Professor of Pediatric Surgery at the University of Chicago, where he also assisted in transplant research. Recruited to establish a Pediatric Surgery program at the University of Maryland Hospital in Baltimore, he co-founded a joint training program in the specialty with The Johns Hopkins University Hospital. Dr. Hill is esteemed as an academician, practitioner, mentor and advocate by patients, their families, trainees, colleagues, and friends.

Friends may gather on Saturday, August 6, 2022, at 1:00 pm at Gompf Funeral Home, 440 Center Street in Cardington, and for the burial in Glendale Union Cemetery. Immediately following the burial, family and friends may gather at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 336 W. Main Street, Cardington, Ohio 43315.
