James D. Gibson, age 77 of Cardington, passed away Saturday May 16, 2026, at Grady Memorial Hospital surrounded by his family. He was born to the late Hershell and Edna Mae (Slone) Gibson, on September 13, 1948, in Raven, KY.
James was a 1966 graduate of Knott County High School. Following graduation, he worked as a Union Millwright for many years. Throughout his career, he took on many different jobs.
James loved hunting and fishing and enjoyed spending as much time outdoors as he could. He especially loved taking his boat to Lake Erie and spending hours out on the water fishing. He was truly an outdoorsman at heart.
On October 2, 1999, James married Vicki L. (Shope) in Crestline, OH, and she survives in Cardington.
In addition to his wife, James is survived by his two grandsons, David and Cory Meachem, whom he raised and cared for as his own from a young age; his stepchildren, Tammy Mullins and David Meachem; numerous step-grandchildren; and his sister, Martha Thomas.
In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his two brothers, Robert and Elmer Gibson.
Friends may call on Saturday May 30, 2026, from 2:00 to 4:00 PM at Gompf Funeral Home, 440 Center Street in Cardington. The funeral service will be held directly following the visitation at 4:00 PM with Pastor Nate Williams officiating.
