Howard Leroy Gompf, beloved husband, father, and brother, age 94 of Cardington, passed away Thursday, April 10, 2025, at Marion General Hospital. He was born on June 3, 1930, to the late Selby L. And Mildred N. (Galleher) Gompf.
Howard was a 1948 graduate of Mount Gilead High School where he was active in band and FFA helping on the family farm and raising livestock. Upon graduating high school Howard worked at Curl Funeral Home in Cardington.
Harriet first saw Howard when she was riding the school bus home, and he was standing outside the funeral home on Main Street in Cardington. They began dating and recently celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary.
Howard served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War - serving on a military mail train in Germany where he frequently had to cross from West Germany into the communist controlled East Germany.
After serving, Howard married the love of his life Harriet Marie (Shoults) in Mount Gilead, on February 20, 1954, and she survives in Cardington.
Howard and Harriet made their home at Harriet's childhood farm in Cardington. He raised various crops and livestock. Always managing to have a farm animal in the house.
In addition to his loving wife of 71 years, Howard is survived by his children: Karen (James) Hatfield of Cardington, Diane (Richard) Hamlin of Portage MI, and Teresa (Gene) Youshock of Chesapeake, VA; grandchildren: Christina Roberts, Cody Franks, Nathan Franks, Kati Schmelzer, Andrea Stinchcomb, Emily Hamlin, and Justin Hamlin; eleven great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; as well as his brothers: Robert and Harold Gompf.
In addition to his parents, Howard was preceded in death by his infant daughter Debra Mary, and infant son Michael William Gompf, his brother Richard Gompf and sister Eileen Gompf.
Friends may call on Monday, April 14, 2025, from 10:00 to 11:30 AM at Gompf Funeral Home, 440 Center Street in Cardington. The funeral service will directly follow at 11:30 AM with Celebrant LeAnne Gompf officiating. Following the service, the burial will take place in the Glendale Union Cemetery.
