Homer Hollingsworth Obituary

Homer Eugene "Gene" "Geno" Hollingsworth, 81, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family, on January 24, 2026. He was born on January 21, 1945, in Galion, OH, to Ruth (Miller) Richey and Homer Thoman. Later in life, Gene was adopted by his stepdad, Roy Hollingsworth.

Gene attended and graduated from Mount Gilead schools, with the class of '64. In 1962, he was a proud member of the Indians' undefeated football team, earning All-Conference honors. One year after graduation, he was drafted into the United States Army and served in Germany at Dachau Concentration Camp as a Small Arms Mechanic. During his service, Gene graciously received the Sharpshooter Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and National Defense Service Medal - all of which reflected his dedication, discipline, and commitment to duty. In recognition of his service, Geno was deeply honored and appreciative to participate in the 2019 Honor Flight to Washington D.C. This experience was something he sincerely cherished.

After being honorably discharged from the Army, he began a long career at ITT North Electric, where he worked as a tester, for over 20 years. During his time working at ITT North, he was able to meet his loving and devoted wife, Betty. Geno continued his strong work ethic at Meijer, where he worked in the Deli department for 10 years.

On May 10, 1969, Gene married Betty Waddell, and together they shared 52 loving years of marriage. They were blessed with four children: Ken Hollingsworth, Kim (Gene) Hobbs, Kelli (Steve) Pfeifer, and Karen Seitz. They were also blessed with five grandchildren, Brady, Kaitlynn, Jacob, Haley - who was known as "His girl," and Carter, who they adored. Gene was looking forward to the arrival of his first great-granddaughter, as well.

Gene was a devoted member of the First Baptist Church, proudly serving as a Deacon. Even as a young child, Geno would walk himself to church, always knowing where he needed to be. Gene had many passions such as genealogy, coaching baseball, and cheering for the Cleveland Indians, Cleveland Browns, and Ohio State Buckeyes. Gene was also a member of the Lions Club. He even ran his own small store, where he would set up a booth at local flea markets. Above all, he cherished time with his family, supporting his children and grandchildren in all of their activities.

Gene was stubborn in the best way, tough as nails, yet, with the heart of a lion. He led by example - showing the importance of hard work and making connections with others. Those around him always felt how deeply they were loved.

Gene is survived by his brother LeRoy (Sandy) Hollingsworth, sister Cordelia "Dee" Barler, Uncle Richard "Dick" Miller, children, his grandchildren, his great grandchild, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and best doggie - Silas, who he shared numerous meals with. Gene was preceded in death by his wife Betty, mother Ruth Richey, father Homer Thoman, stepfather Roy Hollingsworth, and brothers Arthur "Wayne" Hollingsworth, Mike Hollingsworth, and Loren "Dale" Thoman.

After years of asking for and "searching" for his beloved wife, Betty, we find comfort knowing Gene has finally been reunited with her.

We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Woodside Village Care Center for the impeccable care they provided for our Dad and Papa. Additionally, we would like to thank Avita Hospice for their care.
