Hazel Dobson (Stedman) Handwerk

Hazel D. Handwerk, age 86, of Edison, died Tuesday, August 3, 2021, at her home. She was born on November 11, 1934, to Louis and Jennie (Holland) Stedman who preceded Hazel in death.

Hazel was a 1952 graduate of Peace Dale High School in Rhode Island. After graduation Hazel served honorably in Women's Army Corp for two years. She worked as a Nursing Assistant at Morrow County Hospital until retirement. Even after retirement, Hazel had a passion for taking care of others and had worked as a home health nursing aid for many more years.

Hazel was a member of the VFW and AMVETS where she was past president of Post 104 in Delaware. Hazel enjoyed crocheting blankets for her family, cooking, baking, canning, and gardening. Hazel was known as "Mom" by all the neighborhood kids growing up.

On January 14, 1978, Hazel married Jack Handwerk in Edison, OH, who preceded her in death on August 10, 2015.

Hazel is survived by her children David (Tamara) Brey of Delaware, Carol (Carl) Holt of Cardington, Jake (Peggy) Brey of Edison, Samuel (Pete) Brey of Edison, James (Scott) Brey of Granville, and Georgann (Chris) Kniepp of Edison, her brother, Samuel Stedman of W. Kingston RI, fifteen grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Hazel was preceded in death by her first husband, John Brey in 1977, her son Roy Mullins, brothers, Louis Stedman, James Stedman, Harrison Stedman, Don Stedman, John Stedman and sisters, Jane Donnelly, Barbara McNulty, and Mary Adams.

Friends may call on Friday, August 6, 2021, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at Gompf Funeral Home, 440 Center Street in Cardington. The funeral service will be held following calling hours, at the funeral home at 7:00 pm with Chaplin Chris Plough officiating. The burial will take place on Monday August 9, 2021 at 12:30 pm in the Ohio Western Reserve Cemetery with full military honors.  in the Ohio Western Reserve Cemetery with full military honors.
