Brigit Marie Porteus was born in Columbus, Ohio on April 8, 1982. When she was six, she moved with her family to Cardington, where she stayed until after graduation from Cardington-Lincoln High School in 2000. Brigit attended Point Park University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where she studied education and children's theater. After graduation, she worked as a visiting artist/teacher at various schools in Pittsburgh. In 2008, Brigit spent nine months as an English teacher in Rancaga, Chile, then three months in American Samoa. Returning to central Ohio, she worked as a teacher and a counselor.
In June of 2015, Brigit married her best friend, Mike Thomas of Cardington, Ohio. Besides being a loving stepmother to his boys Rowan and Sullivan, she and Mike welcomed Daisy into their lives on October 11, 2014.
Following a protracted battle with liver disease, Brigit passed on at Riverside hospital on January 19, 2026. She is survived by her husband, Mike Thomas of Cardington, her stepsons, Rowan and Sullivan of Delaware, and her daughter, Daisy, also of Delaware, her parents Gary and Katie of Ostrander, her sister Nella of Ostrander, and her brother Luke (Allison) of Bardstown, Kentucky. She will also be missed by her mother-in-law, Dorothy Thomas of Cardington, Her sister-in-law, Kim (John) Hulslander of Delaware and her sister-in-law, Mandy (Chad) Holt of Cardington, Ohio. Her nieces and nephews include Max Porteus, Olivia, Autumn Holt and Donald Hulslander.
Brigit was a vibrant, adventurous and kind-hearted woman, who spread joy and laughter wherever she went. She never met a stranger, as all were welcomed into her life. We have no doubt that she is currently organizing a dance party with the angels. She will be sorely missed her family and many friends.
A celebration of Brigit's life will be held on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, from 4:00 to 6:00 PM at Gompf Funeral Home, 440 Center St. Cardington, Ohio 43315 with the celebration of Brigit's life and service directly following at 6:00 PM with Celebrant Denise Johnson officiating.
