Margaret Berniece Van Houten, beloved wife mother, grandmother and sister, age 80 of Cardington, passed away Sunday, April 13, 2025, at Marion General Hospital. She was born on March 9, 1945, Grundy, Virginia to the late Earnest and Ettie (Hess) Hamon.
Berniece was a 1963 graduate of Haysi High School. She had worked for North Electric which became I.T.T Power Systems in accounts receivable, American Airlines for their customer service department and finished her career at Medco Health working in the customer service department.
Berniece loved singing karaoke, playing cards and gardening. Most of all she loved being with her family and making memories with them.
On December 6, 1963, Berniece married the love of her life, Lanny R. Van Houten, in Haysi, Virginia. He preceded her in death on April 8, 2020.
Left to cherish Berniece's memory are her children: Rick (Jodi) Van Houten and Tammy (JR) Graham, both of Mount Gilead; grandchildren: Maurissa (Nick) McKitrick, Adam Van Houten, Taylor Van Houten, and Abbie Van Houten; her siblings: Judy (Brad) Mosher of Mount Gilead, Ohio, Lois Mullins of Virginia, Betty Slay of Athens, Ohio, Jimmy (Leah) Hamon of Galion, Ohio and Rita (Curtis) Hamon of Delaware.
In addition to her parents and her husband, Berniece was preceded in death by two brothers Ray and Beacher, and her sister Ann Gale Sutherland.
Friends may call on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, from 11:00 to 1:00 PM at Gompf Funeral Home, 440 Center Street in Cardington with the funeral service directly following at 1:00 PM with Minister Brad Mosher officiating. Following the service, the burial will take place in the Bryn Zion Cemetery.
