John Montgomery Obituary

John Paul Montgomery, age 62 of Mount Gilead, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on March 3, 2024, after a long hard fight with complications of diabetes. He was born on January 4, 1962, In Portsmouth to the late Reverend Dewey C. and Esther (Asbury) Montgomery.

John was a faithful attendee of Christ the King Worship Center in Delaware. He watched online every Sunday and very much admired his Pastor Andy Freeman.

John was a lover of nature and the outdoors. He loved to watch the birds out his front door. John was also an avid hunter and fisherman, as a teen he would fish off of the bridge on the Chesapeake Bay in Baltimore, Maryland and trap crabs. He loved seafood, especially crab cakes. Another pastime of John's was going to see classic cars and hot rods, but his favorite sport of all was football and watching his 'boys' of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

John had a wonderful personality and a beautiful smile. He always kept people laughing with his many stories. When you visited John thinking you were going to make him feel better, you were the one who came away laughing and happy that you made the visit.

John is survived by his sisters, Pauline Daniels of Mt. Gilead who was his devoted care giver, and Emmalee Eagon of Cardington, Sister-in-laws, Mary Montgomery and Becky Montgomery both of Cardington; his son, Spencer Hartsock of Hilliard; and numerous nephews and nieces.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his two brothers: Christopher and Rev. Dewey Montgomery; sister, Gladys Hitchcox; niece, Heather Turner; nephew, Anthony Montgomery; great nephews, Canaan and Kason Weaver; and great nieces, AnneMarie and Autumn Helton.
